Something that greatly helped me develop gratitude was working with the profoundly Developmentally Disabled. As I saw their limitations, I developed a sense of gratitude for what I have been blessed with. I carry that gratitude with me to this day.

“..it is not because a man is in abundance that his life is in his possessions.” Luke 12:15 Darby translation. The Messiah says to every soul of man the same thing he once said to the rich young ruler: ‘Go sell all you have and give to the poor and come follow me’. Too bad that modern Christianity can’t seem to believe that command as easily and readily as they do ‘go into all the world and make disciples’. Both are equally valid and in force, but without doing the first you cannot even be a disciple of the Messiah; but of course that doesn’t stop most from thinking they are Christians, talking like they are and giving lip service to God. When Christ says to them: ‘depart from me you workers of inequity, I never knew you’, they will no doubt look around the room dumbfounded as to whom he is speaking, just as the 11 Apostles were when Judas went off to betray Him, taking the money bag with him, by the way. You want an attitude adjustment, get a wife or religion. You want life? Follow Him fully, completely, unreservedly, unashamedly and faithfully.

People that usually stay grounded, stay close to their roots. You have to remember where you came from, to ever appreciate where you are. Some even keep their "pains" close, so that they never loose sight of the little things. To want more, is a sign of growth. If you feel you have more than you need, then maybe you need to find a charitable way to help others. But don't ever feel guilty about growing unless it becomes the priority over caring. A man that gives of his self, gives from the heart, a man that gives with possessions, gives from the mind.

More appreciative of life and blessings? If it is appreciation of material posessions, I can't offer any advice.
If more appreciative of life and blessings, you don't have to leave the country, or just give, you must experience something that touches the very heart of your soul.
Experiences of seeing an elderly person alone in a nursing home, anticipating a visit from anyone, just to know they are valuable as a person.
Experiences of leaving some outrageous tip to the waiter or waitress who works on Christmas Day away from their family, children to keep that job that feeds their family.
It's the joy you feel giving of yourself to others.

Volunteer at a homeless shelter or abused children's center and you will see that wanting those things you cannot afford, but want anyways even though you do not have the space. It will open your mind and show you that in order to be a "rich" man you do not need all of those pointless possessions! Besides when you get those expensive things, you have to pay more in insurance and they get stolen a little more often, so then you are out of money and out of that treasured possession! :-)

Jesus said there were more important things in life than money and posessions. He said it is more blessed to give than to receive. Follow Jesus, he will lead you to true satisfaction and to a nicer character.
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
"The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
"No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.
"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
"And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

We are on earth for the evolution of our eternal souls. In order to evolve we constantly want/need to experience new things, including having new experiences and having new things...this is part of life and nothing to be ashamed of. If you are greedy and don't share with others then maybe you would consider that wrong, but it is not necessarily wrong to want more. Thank God each and everyday for all that you have.

Notice your surroundings. Spend time to look at nature. Watch the news. Meditate. Clear your mind, you might have a lot on your mind! Try and look on the positive sides of things, ( I should know how it is to feel less optomistic, my friend's the one who always says " Be Positive!"). Finally, Lighten up, and don't worry about little things, look forward to the next day, for every minute, every second is precious, and life is to short to dwell.
