If you're staying in New Orleans, I have a good suggestion for you. You can get great rooms for a really cheap price (much better than hotel rates--sorry, but $100 a night is crazy for someone with a budget, or for a student) if you stay in a private room at a hostel. Here are some links for you. It's worth it to at least give them a call and see if they offer private rooms. Generally the private rooms are bigger than you'll get in a hotel, are cheaper, and are quite nice. Some offer kitchens in the rooms, too, like the Marquette House. Marquette House had kitchen with fridge, a seating area with couches and chairs, a big bed, and high ceilings in the rooms. I'm not sure of its condition after Katrina, though, so you'll have to check. I think we paid around $35 a night. You can't beat that, especially for the size of the rooms.

I have stayed in private rooms in New Orleans at hostels before, so I'm speaking from personal experience, not just something I read on the Internet.

Choice hotels are considered med prized and are really nice. The Super 8 and days inn motel 6 are cheaper but are not as nice and do not have the breakfast that choice hotels do. I would got to www.choicehotels.com, or just enter in the State you are going to followed by hotels.com

Most sites are cheaper than Hotels.com.

I like to go directy to chains I like.

I typically use yahoo yellow pages to find local hotels and then check the rates directly.
