"Matt: 7:21. Not every one that saith to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven: but he that doth the will of my Father who is in heaven, he shall enter into the kingdom of heaven.
7:22. Many will say to me in that day: Lord, Lord, have not we prophesied in thy name, and cast out devils in thy name, and done many miracles in thy name?
7:23. And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity."

Does this have to do with the teaching of the sin against the Holy Spirit?
Please, I need to know. It seems so obscure to me. Is it possible to commit this sin and not know it? If so, how can we guard against committing it?

No this is those who try to earn their salvation. Note what they say: we did this and we did that. They did not plead that they were righteous in Christ but in themselves and that won't make it.

This is like the Pharisees who thought they were righteous by obeying the law.. Read Luke 18 (some of it below)

The only way to the Father is through Christ Jesus. Meaning when Jesus came to earth, He showed us throughout His whole life how to get to Heaven; He lived a model life. The only way to Heaven is to follow through His footsteps. Some people sidestep the Path, or turn the other direction. We will stumble, but God will be there to pick us back up, and keep us steady as long as we let Him. Not everyone who knows who Jesus is follows in His footsteps. These are such people.
Look at Jesus' life, and what He did, what He said, what He taught. This will help you stay on the Path.

These are those people that are following after the beast, but they are deceived into thinking that they are following Jesus, if they had only studied their bible and letting IT interpret itself instead of letting others interpret it for them, or just going along with what ever the preacher or others said and thinking that they could trust them with their eternal life and that in that way they would get to heaven. Remember that Jesus did say" whatsoever ye ask in my name, that I will do, that the father may be glorified in the Son." This is why they could do these things and still not get to heaven. WE MUST HAVE A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS!

The best way to answer would be to remind you that some people turn to God for selfish reasons. They are looking for God to 'work' for them and do 'magic' tricks for their lives. The sin against the Holy Spirit is the life of atheism. Refusing to believe and dieing that way is the Sin against the Holy Spirit. It is unpardonable because the person died without ever praying for Salvation.

In this day many people have gone after the things that are mentioned in this passage such as miracles and healing etc. God has always condemned sign seeking saying those who seek for signs are evil and adulterous. The reason they are condemned is because they lack faith. If they can't see it they don't accept it and God says that without faith it is impossible to please God. This sign seeking denominations are only about 100 years starting in 1906 by a man named Charles Fox. Personally I think that this is the group that He is talking about.

What you are missing is CONTEXT! Read the verses before it (15-20) He is speaking of false prophets. This is his Sermon on the mount....1st of all he is speaking to JEWS. 2nd of all they were in the age of LAW (we, by the way , are in the age of grace). He was speaking to the jewish nation about the religous leaders of that time.(inspirationally, we can learn about spiritual discernment from this, we watch and see what kind of fruit a man bears to discern whether he is of God or not)

Americans are very good examples of this....so many people claim to be christians, but they have no relationship with Christ, they have no fruit in their lives to bear witness to their life in the Lord.

Keep studying, Keep praying, make sure you have accepted Jesus as your Saviour and that you KNOW what that means. You will get there in GODS time.

Friend, it has to do with honoring God with your lips only and not with your heart and with your actions.

When you claim to be following Jesus and yet you ignore what he taught about feeding the poor, visiting the sick, clothing the naked, etc. you are ignoring what he claims.

Take a look at this passage and you will see what I am talking about:
31"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. 32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'

37"Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'

40"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'

41"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.'

44"They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?'

45"He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'

46"Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life." (Matthew 25)

So you see "faith without works is dead" our faith in Christ must necessarily lead us to love and help others the way that Jesus taught. We must make real sacrifices to help those in need.

Jesus means people who appear to follow him with their words and actions, but their hearts are not commited.
