Read to them and teach them to do things..any simple thing like making a grilled cheese sandwich or sorting laundry ....opens dialog and helps them with the learning process. Besides it can be good quality time together.

First of all as a parent u should always keep in contact with the school and teachers at your child school and if your child is failing u should work with the teacher so that he/she could give u pointers eg less playtime, more studing, less hanging out, u c the teacher might know ur child a letter better than u do because they spend more time with them than u and not only that but kids tend to act differently at home.

Well to begin with you just need to be a good parent and alot of things will fall into place. I believe that your question automatically makes you a good parent because you want to know how you can do things better for your child. To that, I say BRAVO to you!! Now, I guess I would try to set a schedule, especially if your child has alot of extra activities like sports or music or dance or whatever. Setting a time every evening, say RIGHT after or right before dinner, sets a pattern for your child so that it is not too difficult for them to agree to sit down with you and do their work. Second, it helps them also if they have any problems focusing on anything at one time or for more than 15 minutes or so. Last but not least, take the time out of your schedule to sit down with your little one and do it together. It will mean more quality time with your child, and it will take all your day's stress away by spending that time focusing on him/her. Then Whalla!! A pattern is formed and when your child reaches high school, they will be organizing their time all on their own and ready to take on life by the horns!!!!
Congratulations on being a great parent -

By communicating with the teachers. If they do not respond, contact your child's counselor and involve her/him. If that does'nt work talk to the principal. Getting information before report cards is essential to staying on top of what is going on. More times than none, a child will avoid homework or big projects. Stay involved consistently so your child knows that you are aware of what is going on at school
