Guys do it because they can. Look, let's face it, some guys are "jerks." They live life jerking other people around and playing with people's emotions and stuff. It is kind of like hunting. They "bag" girls that they are not interested in, in order to make another "mark" or "notch" on the ole' tree trunk. It is all part of the game. Guys do it to brag. They do it to feel good about themselves. it is a "rush" to get someone interested in you..."girls do it, too."

It is closer to a boost to the ego.
Most guys who flirt all the time, will only go so far. They have a definite line they won't cross. Some just like to collect phone numbers but won't call. This is especially true when the guy is in a group and is showing off his prowess to his friends.
But I also think it is part of the male biology. I once heard that if there were a global catastrophe that wiped out most of the male population, it would only take 23 males 5 years to repopulate with all of the women on the planet to restore the original population that was wiped out.
If there were only 23 females left on the planet after a global catastrophe that wiped out most of the female population, we'd be in trouble.
I guess male sexual promiscuity is the safety system for repopulating the planet.

And vice versa... why do some women flirt with men that they have no intention of even ever seeing again? It is a boost to ones ego to be aware that someone is flirting back. The problem comes in when the flirting goes beyond a polite, social moment. At that point, there is usually a partner of one or the other whose feelings are getting hurt. Which in turn leads to anger and fights. A large number of people simply don't know when enough is enough unfortunately.

Ah gee whiz, flirting is fun! Most of the time it is non-verbal and passes time while in a long boring line. It builds the self-esteem of both participants and helps them develop more sophisticated skills in communicating with the opposite sex! And MOST unattractive women know this! Guys too! We get to practice and it makes the persons doing it feel good. They still have the touch! It's a form of flattery on a deeper level even if you know it isn't going anywhere. It also makes the participants more attractive to others because maybe there is more to the person than what is seen on the surface. All of the above! I sure like it!
Some of the disparity that I see in other comments is a confusion of drawing the line at flirtation and "doing the deed".

Both. We want to make the girl feel good as we are flattered by her interest and it also provides us with an ego boost. Not any different than the way girls act.

I think you already knew the anwer. Basically men are more attracted to physical aspects of anybody. Take for example the friends they have. They tend to go with people who are famous or somehow have something to show. Thats still the same on how they deal with girls. They are more attracted to pretty women. It's men's nature to show and boost their ego, as if they are the most power creature in the world and they can control anybody else.

Flirting is fun, you should try it some more! That way you can get more variety to pick from AND it's good for you. You will feel so much more confident and better about yourself. It will boost you ego sky high.

For some unknown reason many guys seem to think their duty in life is to flirt, that its cool to flirt. Most of all, everyone wants attention and some girls even do the same thing. To some its sociable. The more girls a guy gets to dangle the more of a ladie's man he is, or so he thinks.

Well i am what u consider a flirt...i flirt with a lot of girls...usually with one s that i'm not readily attracted to..but its not to boost my ego...it's just to make them feel like they too can be liked...
