I'm not sure about too much but I think holding cats when they're kittens is a good thing because as time goes on they'll get more comfortable with being held and become more people friendly.

Some research suggests that handling kittens each day during the first month of their lives may improve their learning ability.
Handling kittens requires general common sense. Just as with human babies,
you should be very careful when holding your little kitten.
You may cause serious harm to your kitten through incorrect
handling, so always pay close attention to how you hold your young cat.

If the kitten shows to you that it doesn't want to be touched any more, then it is best to respect its wishes. You cannot feel what it feels but it might get raw if your touching it TOO much. Like a nose when its runny.
Your probably not holding it too long. Just don't drop the kitten.

Knowing how long a kitten wants to be held is part of the training process cats put humans through. You can see how well this training works by some of the other answers you see here. These people have been properly trained. Just pay close attention to the cat teaching you and you will CATch on fast.

That's a question that needs details to answer.
If you're talking about newborn or "baby" kittens, then yes. You shouldn't handle them too much. You can "pet" them with a fingertip, but you shouldn't pick them up too much.
Once they have their eyes open and are walking around, then it's pretty safe to hold them -- and good for them to get used to handling and to bond. Just don't ever "hold" them when they want down unless there's a good reason to -- like a safety issue. If you restrain them when they want down, they'll associate with that and may not like being held at all as grown-up kitties. But holding and loving and snuggling a cooperative kitten is wonderful for kitten and human!

The age of the kitten is a factor here. If the kittens have not opened their eyes, then yes, you should be more gentle with them and let them feed to grow. If the kittens have opened their eyes and are beginning to crawl, then you should do your best to be constantly around them. More than one person should watch them. This human interaction (playing, petting, handleing) will teach the kittens how to have human interaction and they will be less likely to scratch, bite, etc. as a result of touching. Most adult cats that scratch and bite were not held as a baby and they are skiddish.

Yes an no. You gotta let the kitten eat, sleep how it wants to, move around to strengthen its new little body. But hugging, kissing, talking to, etc is great for a kitten. The more people attention a kitten gets the more of a lap cat, people cat the cat will be later on.
I've loved on all mine and they all sleep snuggled right up with me nightly cause of it.

Cats love the attention! If you want to ALWAYS have to pay attention to the kitten when it gets older then holding it will NEVER be too much.

It depends on what you consider too much. I've held my kitten for more than half an hour. If you don't squeeze it and talk to it I believe you can old it for quite a long time... nevertheless it depends on the kitten's personality. I believe mine thinks he's a dog...

How Old?
If they are 6 weeks or older. Hold them.
Newborn or tiny kittens I wouldn't hold all the time. Could make them sick.
