First of all... for all of you who said Uvula... Congratulations!!! But to set the record straight... the epiglottis is a thin flap of tissue that covers on opening called the glottis which is the tube that passes down into your lungs. The epiglottis closes over the glottis when you swallow to prevent food from entering into your lungs. (very useful!) The uvula's main functions include assisting with swallowing and your gag reflex.

The epiglottis. Researchers state that it did have a fnction in primative man, but is now not as useful as it once was.
The epiglottis also does help foo pass done into your throat & not your lungs.
