This is SO annoying, every step I take he's right behind me. I've had him for almost a year and it has been like this since day one (at first it was cute, now not so much). Is there a way to train him to stay put?

I got him from a shelter. He gets plenty of food, love, bathroom breaks, and social time with other dogs (he's actually really spoiled). It's just that if he's laying down and I leave the room for a second he'll wake up and follow me...

Canines are pack animals. Everything they do is by instinct for their survival in their natural habitat. (That by the way is true for every species including Homo sapiens). Your dog has correctly identified you as part of his pack and also as the alpha or at least a higher ranking individual than himself. He instinctively knows that you are the source of safety, food etc. this instinct (knowledge) causes him to want to stay close by.
If you want him to stop following you then you have to train him to obey commands such as: sit, stay, come and then something for staying a distance such as "away". It really isn't hard because he will do anything to please you since you are the key to everything he could ever want.

One thing about dogs is that they can be very devoted and show unconditional love. Doesn't sound like a dog was the right pet for you. Are you sure the dog has been properly fed and that it has been put out to eliminate? A dog will follow you around if it needs something. Most people would be so happy to have such a devoted dog....

I have a miniature schnauzer who does the same thing. He even stands across the hall in the door way while I am in the kitchen and peeks his head around the door and watches me...I tease him and call him a pervert because he will stand and watch me dress or sit on the commode. He never tires of following and watching every move I make...it sounds a little creepy actually...but, guess that is the breed. I am trying to get him to at least lay on the sofa just six feet from me and not jump up in the chair where I am...works sometimes and sometimes not...good luck on your endeavor with your pooch...

My first Dane was that way. I got her when she was 18 months old. She attached herself to my side and took every step I took for 10 years. She was traumatized. Her previous owner had died, she was put in a kennel, away from her home and everything she knew. She loved me because in her mind I saved her from all that and gave her a happy home. I lost her 6 years ago and I still miss her with every step I take.
So understand the world from your dog's point of view. Whatever he went through before you, you are his world now. It is not annoying, it is the greatest thing that can happen to you.

he follows you because he looks to you as the alpha dog in his pack, dogs are naturally pack animals and when in the wild will follow the head of the pack and take their cues on what to do next from them, so with this instinct he follows you. to teach him to stay put when you leave the room you need to find a good obedience class and enroll yourseleves in it.

it rather is not likely seeing which you're ill, oftentimes canine purely experience that or take word of it once you're needless to say ill, as on your existence would desire to end in a couple of minutes variety ill. She trusts you. in case you feed her and walk her she is additionally putting around in wish of being rewarded, although interior the case of my English Toy Terrier he does not have confidence many human beings (which incorporate my brother who constantly invades his very own area devoid of be conscious of) so he sticks by potential of me as no longer purely do I walk and feed him yet I take word of whilst he needs area, water etc and that i determine my brother the two maintains to be away or respects him. From adventure the variety of canine that shop on with human beings around everywhere are smaller canine, incredibly terriers.
