How do you know that some of the people in the military right now are not related to a senator or a house rep?

As to the question, those in the military signed up freely for various reasons. No one stopped them from doing it and no one forced them to do it. It was by personal choice.

People in wealthy families usually send their kids straight to college after high school because they can afford to do so. If their kid gets a degree in something and wants to serve in the military they can go in as an officer and get a nice assignment (like patrolling the beaches in the tropics).
People that have kids that go into the military right after high school do not have this luxury. They need trained and educated so are not given much choice as to the assignment and have to take what's given to them.

You really should not assume things you know nothing about. My cousin is a United States Senator and her son is fighting in Iraq, in a combat position. He is serving in full active duty. I also know of many other senators and reps. that have children AND realatives in the military, also serving full duty.

Because they are wealthy. Children of wealthy people do not have to serve in the military - never have had to.
During the Civil War, you could actually buy your way out of combat, and let the poor kids do the dying.

Most people join the military to get a step up the economic ladder. The children of Congressmen usually don't need that step up, the have all the connections they need to get viable, lucrative employment.

I guess that's because their children and relatives have minds of their own & they choose not to be on the military.

tradition. the poor get sent to war. politicians are the spokes people for the military, and they give them selves pay raises with our tax money. we'll keep you safe...they say. and then the number 3 homeland security guy solicits fourteen year old girls with his badge and paycheck, and his secure job. until they get caught. those rich politician kids are the future politicians of our state.....thye need to learn the business from someone, and that last name can make or break a politician. Because they know how messed up everything really is. They know that what they say we are fighting for isn't the truth. Why let your kid go and fight for something that you know isn't true. Most of them I think are just cowards though. The rest is up for you though. Don't take what I'm say as I don't support our troops because i do. I just don't support the people who send us to fight a war that doesn't really have a meaning yet.

no, i think some of them have serve in the military but only in desk assigment not in f...ing combat, they serve just to show they love this country but not worth dying for like not many american service men figthing now on irag ang afghanistan, and you can see their pretty smiling f...ing faces cover in magazines while ordinary combat men died in road side bombing in iraq & afghanistan.
