I disagree with most of the answers. A dog scatches out with his back legs to COVER the scent of his feces or urine, so other animals won't know he has been there. An animal urinates on the ground or a tree etc. to mark his territory. He would not want to cover it up if he wanted to mark what he considered his territory.

This is done when marking territory. The kicking spreads the scent around so other dogs are aware of their presence.

The odd little dance is a way to spread their scent. It's the same concpet as leg lifting. They want to let the world know "Rex wuz here."

It serves two purposes. Spread the scent while concealing the content.

in the wild thats how they mark their space...with scratches on the ground and on things...just like big cats...but in a yard i would think its to clean their feet or bury their mess like cats do..
