Do something for someone else. Not only will it be nice for the other person it will help you get your mind off of your own problems.
Drinking, shopping and eating are all quick fixes and may help for a while but I think that you need to look for something more long term that will make you happy.
What do you like doing? What do you love doing? Things like guitar, writing, chess, gardening, painting.
Try different things untill you find something you like.
Also make yourself goals and try to stick to them.
To get more self esteem you should do things that make you proud of yourself rather than external beauty.
Oh and about finding god. God is great if you truly have faith but dont try to use it as a band aid for your problems.
Good luck.

Wow, there are a lot of good answers here. ( not all of them mind you). You are low on self- esteem huh? OK. this is going to sound crazy. I had really low self esteem in high school, until one of my friends made me do this. For 24 hours every week, I had to act (most of the time i was joking) conceited. I mostly did this around my friends b/c they knew why I did it, and they usually thought it was funny. But after a while it worked, it wasn't that I actually became conceited, but just by joking around about it, I began to look at my self more positively. Now as for the making you happier..... First of all, find what makes you unhappy and eliminate it! Second of all.... figure out what makes you happiest in the entire world (its different for everybody, like mine is hanging out with my best friend and playing guitar) and do it! Love your family, love your friends, love your enemies, and to thine own self be true!

One thing we tend to do that causes or exacerbates what you described above is called using our "mental filter". This is when we tend to filter out the good things that happen to us during the day and allow the negatives to pass through. We focus and dwell on them and ignore those positives. Spend the day with a small notebook or piece of folded paper and write down the positives. Do not write down the negatives. Read this throughout the day and especially at the end of the day.

One thing tomorrow??? Hmmm, go to the movie "the break up", funny and will give you a couple of laughs.
Go buy some 80's music cd's and take off with your walkman for a long long walk..or jog. If you dont have one; get yourself a dog to walk with...will be your best buddy!

help others. Volunteer for something or go visit someone who has troubles.
Write thank you notes.
just do anything that will help you to not focus on yourself but on others instead.
it works.
or if you don't like go swimming. it's a good way to relax too.
