No, it gives out light constantly. It takes 8 mins for it to travel from the sun to where you see it on the sidewalk. (actually it is 8.3168708 minutes, but I don't want to be picky.)

The sun is constantly giving out light - it just takes 8 minutes for the light from the sun to reach earth.

It takes about 8 or 9 minutes for light from the sun to reach earth. So I guess that's right.

The way I read the question sounds like the sun lets out some light every eight minutes, which isn't accurate.
The sun is constantly burning, producing light. That light leaves the sun, and travels to earth in eight minutes.
If, for some odd reason, the sun were to be instantly "turned off", we would be unaware of this for eight minutes. And then it would get really cold, really fast.

Well, to an extent. Light travels from the sun for 8 minutes to reach Earth (so if the Sun blew up, theoretically you wouldn't know for another 8 minutes).

Light takes around 8 and a half minutes to reach us from the sun. I think that is what you mean.

Though the speed of light is 186,000 miles/second (300,000 km/s), it still takes the light 8.3 minutes to reach the earth, so we are all seeing the sun as it was 8.3 minutes ago. That's true for everything, even when you are looking at you monitor you're not seeing it as it is, but as it was, billionths of a second ago! We are all constantly looking back in time.

I see no significance to the every 8 minutes business. It does not make any sense whatsoever and I am sure it is not true and has absolutely NO relevance.

I have no idea, where did you hear this? The sun gives out light according to the weather-I would suspect.
