For the same reason that I didn't let them run with knives when they were little: to protect them from harm.
If your parents don't let you watch R movies and listen to certain music, they are protecting you....They care about you. Some parents don't. You're one of the lucky ones. :)

I listened to the music my son brought home, some of it I found offensive to women, some of it was stupid, and some of it was just poorly written. If I thought something was offensive I explained why from a womans point of view. They same with movies. There is always room for healthy discussion. I didn't judge, he was allowed to listen /watch what he wanted to I just let him know that he was to keep certain songs at a lower volume because they were not my kind of music. My mom and dad didn't like listening to X, the Sex Pistols, and The Clash so I was taught to keep it down when they were home. Just simple respect for each other as individuals.

In R rated movies and even in a lot of music these days there is A LOT of unnecessary sex and violence. Unfortunately teens are exposed to the same stuff outside of their homes but a lot of parents want to make their home a clean, safe haven where the "evils" of the world can't touch their beautiful baby. Unfortunately I believe that it only hurts them in the end because the are just sheltering the child from the storm that is inevitable. I would rather teach my child how to stand strong against it then for them to not know anything about it and have them jump into it blindfolded with their hands tied behind their backs if you know what I mean.

The sweet spot of Hollywood rankings is PG-13. video clips rated R and above reduce out a brilliant target market (like your) proper off the bat. hence any severe moviemaker making video clips worth gazing for leisure and wanting to make $500 million draw back from R. yet i'd agree. once you've internet get proper of entry to there's a lot x rated stuff that looks unavoidable no remember what the search key words are, that R rated looks tame.

It depends, is it rated R b/c it's got horror scenes and loads of violence? People having sex like it's going to expire soon?
Depends.
It also depends on your teen. How mature are they (as a teen)?
Are they secure? Do they make good decisions?
It's your teen, you know them.
Protecting a child is parents responsibility. We protect them from R movies b/c we're in fear of them acting those scenes out, or thinking it's okay to do.
I believe you are how you were raised. In one way or another.
If your parents don't let you watch porn (b/.c it is porn), or violent movies, it's quite respectable.
Enforcing something without communicating why though, is a bad idea in the long run...

We establish our identities by who we hang with, the relationships we keep, our habits we allow and our value system, among other things. And, how we treat our bodies. We are what we eat. The human brain captures and stores all data entered into it...and even though we can't always retrieve it, it still there. So it makes sense to be careful what we feed our brain, and what we allow our children to feed on. BUT...as for teens...well, what's done is done. If the standards in the home were applied to mom and dad as well as their young children from the beginning, then it's matter of family policy... But if the ol' double standard was in play, it's too late for preachin'.

Parents set limits like that because we hesitate to let our kids lose their innocence any sooner than necessary. It's hard to balance that kind of guidance without sheltering them TOO much. I wanted my kids to learn and tried to answer any questions they asked honestly and let them know that other people in the world didn't necessarily share my viewpoint. I knew that I would not be doing them any favors by trying to insulate them from the rest of the world, but at the same time, kids tend to watch and listen to certain things just because it's cool and not because it has any kind of value. I tried to keep an open mind and point out the value in things that I didn't necessarily like and to open their minds to the value in things that were not necessarily cool in the eyes of their friends. That's why they knew who the Beatles and BB King were by the time they started school!
And believe it or not, when you're older, sometimes you miss being innocent.
P.S. If your parents are cramping your style, try asking them to watch or listen to something WITH you. You all might learn something -- and it can open conversation and gain their trust in you.
P.P.S. Another thing to consider is desentization to things like violence, profanity, nudity, etc. Don't underestimate that effect.

When my daughter is at the age where she starts making her own decisions, I'm gonna give her that freedom of choice. Just so you teach your kids right from wrong, they'll have their own conscience to deal with as they grow into adults. For now, you're just here to guide them in the right direction, but you can't take away the things that are gonna help develop them into individuals. Trust is something you have to give to receive. I allow my 3 year old to watch some R movies now. She's not gonna be dumb to the real world and not know what to expect when she gets out on her own. I don't want her to go into it blind and end up making bad choices cause I sheltered her from everything.
