Anything running directly off a harddrive will generally run faster than something off a CD due to lag time between the rpm of the CD and getting the info processed.

But when it comes to what version of linux would be best it is pretty much based on personal preference. There are alot of them out there. http://www.linuxiso.org/ has alot of the more common ones used (and generally more stable). Just play around with all of them and find one you like.

Knoppix is ok but Linux Puppy is actually made for slower computers and it usually runs in ram but you can install it on several types of media.

If you are a power user of Unix-like operating systems, and would want to squeeze the performance out of your PC, you could choose one of either LFS (Linux From Scratch), or Gentoo.

Since you would be compiling almost everything for your system, it could be perfectly tuned for your computer, and hence would be faster than any "out of the box" distro.

I think you'd need a smaller distro, like Runt linux or Puppy linux.
