the person, government, or company giving the scholarship will most likely have to make a direct payment to the school you will be attending, and you will have to prove that you will be attending that school. chances are the only way you will ever see a penny of it is if you get a meal plan and eat the money while you go to class...
if you were to get payment from someone, government, or company it would be a grant not a scholarship.

Why would you turn down an opportunity to learn something at someone else's expense?
I would take the scholarship and use it up...learn a new trade so that money doesn't become an issue, that is the reason for scholarships. You take $40,000 and when you are finished with your working life turn it into 800,000.
No, you don't get the money. The school of your choice gets the money. If you don't want to use it, do yourself a favor give it to a kiddo that can't go because his family is too poor or he doesn't have a family. Make his life better.
Please use the scholarship and make a future for someone!!!! I'll take it and make more money than I do already. Technology seems to be the avenue these days.

Ok, let me ask you this: If you DON'T go back to school on that grant award - where will you be in the same amount of time from now that the grant would have covered had you been in school (say a year's worth of education?) Hmmm?
Another year older but not another year wiser thats what! There are all kinds of classes available at community colleges including ones in art, ceramics, etc. Why not look into it?

Some scholarships have a very broad definition of "School". Some can be used for really fun/expensive classes like flight school. 10k would easily get you a license to fly. Want to stay on the ground... look into continuing ed in your field of business or favorite hobby. Just read and understand the fine print on the rules of the scholarship.

It's a scholarship not the lottery. Some scholarships will allow the money to go to you for books, boarding, supplies, etc. Others go straight to class registration. With my scholarship, I didn't get the residual money until after I had registered for classes. The scholarship went to registration and then the rest came to me. A scholarship for $10,000 will most likely go to registration only.

It really depends upon the rules and regs of the scholarship. If it is a scholarship, then it would be most likely for going to college. You might want to check and see if you can use it for one of your children, if you have any, or a niece or nephew.
If all else fails why not go to college. It doesn't hurt to learn more information to make yourself a well rounded person.

You would have to check with the people giving you the scholarship. Sometimes the scholarship will go directly to you're school's financial office, other times, you will get the check yourself. 10,000 is a lot of money though it will probably have to go to the recipient's school.

a scholarship can't be use at will. but seeing how your 40 and don't plan on going to school then have fun with it. most scholarships can be used at any school that give regionally or nationally creditation. so use it to get a certificate in something fun. such as maybe a pilot school, mechanics license (so you can begin to work on your own vehicle). But yeah just use it towards something fun or towards something that you can learn to do yourself instead of paying for others services.
