I sent a certified letter this past Friday to someone living in my town and I have not received confirmation that they got the letter--it is now Tuesday. I heard that I am supposed to receive a post card in the mail telling me that they received the letter but so far nothing. I probably have this under the wrong category, just didn't know which one to pick.

Receiving a receipt back once the letter was delivered isn't "certified mail". The service you should have purchased if you wanted that was "return receipt requested".
However, the stub which was given to you by the post office has a tracking number on it. You can either call 1-(800)-ASK-USPS and check on it, or you can go to:
http://www.usps.com/shipping/trackandconfirm.htm?from=home&page=0035trackandconfirm
From there, you can enter your tracking number and find out the current status of the letter you mailed. =)

In addition to buying certification, you can also purchase delivery confirmation, which costs a little extra. Now that sufficient time has passed, you can take your receipt to the post office (or call them) and they can track it according to the order number. With certified letters, the US Postal Service nearly always delivers them successfully.

The postcard has to be returned through the mail system after the letter is received. I think you are being a little unrealistic as to the speed of the postal service. Give it a few more days.

The postal service will guarantee that the postcard comes back to you if you wrote your address on the back of the green card...if the person you mailed it to doesn't claim it, it will come back to you marked Unclaimed......if they do, the card will have their signature (or someone at that address)......it generally takes a few days. Hope that helps.

You will get it returned if it is not received. They will make several attempts (3 I think) to deliver.

you can ask for a reciept that shows if it was received or not. this does have to be paid for though.
