If you want to get the most out of your food budget, buy lunch in a brasserie/restaurant, and buy bread, cheese and whatever else you'd like in a grocery store/market for dinner. Lunch is always much more reasonable, and the portions are generally satisfying. Also, most restaurants have a daily "menu" or special for a good price. There are lots of reasonably priced brasseries in the Quartier Latin. I like the Rue de la Huchette. If you go early enough on the right day, Place Monge has a market where you can get super Greek sandwiches (not doner kebab, either) for 5 euros (last time I was there). I think the Rue Mouffetard is a little more expensive, but still not unreasonable. There are also plenty of places to get crêpes with sweet (nutella, sugar, jam) or savory (egg, cheese, ham) fillings, as you like... the more fillings, the more it costs.

I actually like the Louvre food court. There's quite a variety to choose from.

There are a few cafes/brasseries/restaurants across from the Louvre, even a McDonalds. I was not fond of the restaurant beside the Joan of Arc statue. Not sure what it's called, but I was not impressed.

I believe it's required that restaurants post their menus outside of the establishment. That way you can browse the menu and decide whether you want to eat there or not.

There are tons of little cafes near the Louvre. My husband and I ate at those most of the time and spent very little compared to eating in a restaurant. Try several of them and find your favorite...we never had bad food at any of the cafes!
