A Dream Defered is about all of our dreams and how it is usually never accomplished. The majority of us can not accomplish or even follow our dream. A good book to read is A Raisin in The Sun.

Langston Hughes' poem alludes to the situation of Blacks in America following freeing of the slaves. Metaphorically speaking, Blacks were freed, but because of Jim Crow laws and segregation policies, that "dream" nevere came to fruition. It was delayed or deferred. He asks whether that dream will just dry up or explode ie. the Civil Rights movement.

It's about someone who feels really frustrated because they can't achieve their dreams....undertones of anti-racism in the poem - Langston Hughes was black and he didn't get the same kinds of chances that white people did because he was black.

The explode part at the end is about how he feels frustrated enough to need to do something to solve the situation he's in -- could be peaceful or violent, connections with civil rights movement.

Here it is,
What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?

Now that you have read it, try and answer your question one line at a time...

It's about the work during the Harlem Renaissance, when there were people working to enliven the culture of the area with arts, while at the same time, there were people making it impossible for Harlem to live up to its potential, and folks who dreamed it might become a cultural mecca, particularly for African Americans, were both enlivened by the art and disappointed that it never all came to fruition.
