im contemplating getting a canon Gl2 and i have seen rave reviews by pros over the camera, however, many of the user forums state problems with audio. i know i have asked this same question numerous times but its a serious investment that i feel i need to research first. so if anybody who has a canon GL2 could attest to the audio complaints or tell me their general rating of the camera i would appreciate it. Also any toher important facts aboutt he camcorder? and any vital accesories? THANX

I actually have the Canon XL2, and I've never had a problem with the audio on that, but I'd be a bit more hesitant with the GL2, since it's microphone is built in and therefor (I believe) not interchangable. Therefor, if you had any audio problems, it wouldn't just be a simple matter of swapping out the microphones. That could be where the complaints about audio problems come from.

We use Gl-2 and Gl-1 at work. They have great lenses but for any serious work, I use a sony PD-150. (The new model is the PD-170)

Seriously, don't waste your money on a GL-2 at this point. They were a good camera, but they are expensive and they have an issue in the fact that you can't zoom and focus at the same time. For about the same amount of money you can find a PD-x10 wich has built in balanced inputs and dvcam. Alternatively you can get a sony HVR-a1 single CMOS HDV camera. (THis will record DV as well as HDV.) The HVR-A1 is getting rave reviews in DV magazine and Studio magazine. They are saying the color is just as good as the Sony 3ccd HVR-z1 which is saying alot. Also the CMOS sensor uses alot less power so it gets extended battery life.

If you really feel the need for a 3ccd mini-dv Panasonic has a decent one at best buy for $1000. (It will be a good back-up when you move on to a better camera later on.)

Keep in mind that an apple G5 dual 2.5 GB processor with Final Cut will handle HDV.

I own a GL-2 camera, have had it awhile.
It is great, audio is actually very good off the camera mic.
It also has an input jack for an outside mic.
The picture is incredible. I use the camera for paid commercail work and for broadcasting. I have used it next to panasonic and sony and it still comes out the best.
The price has not dropped at all because of its popularity.
Enjoy your new Canon GL-2.
