AVG free edition is simple enough to use and effective. It updates automatically on the internet just like all the top softwares such as Panda , Norton and McAfee

Avg is a good program and it picks up the test viruses I write most of the time(even though they are harmless), But don't just rely upon that to keep you uninfected, A good thing to do is double up with programs like online scanner once or twice a month
online scanners

http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
or if you wish to get more aggressive and are willing to learn a little then these programs can help
System cleaner, so less places to hide
http://www.ccleaner.com/
And my favourite anti hijacking software, called HijackThis. worth using and can be surprising to find out what is hidden and running on your system

As above AVG is good.
You may also wish to try Avast, it is free and it is constantly updated, sometimes every day.
Use your search engine to find it.
