No,

Since World War II, the USA has been committed to the idea of fighting a war on two major fronts. This is the kind of war we fought in WW2. One in the Pacific ocean and the other in Europe.

Our armed forces are always re-evaluating the most current threat. During the cold war, 1950 to 1990, the perceived 'enemy' was communism (ie. USSR). Now we'd have to say it's rogue elements like the Jihadist.

Either way, Afganastan and Iraq is mere practice time for what our army should be able to do.

I think the United States Military is not stretched to thin. It has a military of about 1.2 Million soldiers with only 132,000 in Iraq and 10,000 in Afghanistan and those in Afghanistan are about to pull out or at least decrease the force there because NATO is taking over security in Afghanistan by early July or August!

Not really.

We have 1,419,683 active troops and 1,433,600 reserve force. That's a total of 2,906,453 troops. The U.S. is second behind China for troops. The U.S. has 4.76 troops for every 1,000 people.

The number of troops we have right now in Iraq are only in the 100 thousands. That still leaves us around 900,000 troops left. After that, we have another 1,400,000+ that can be used since that is what the reserves is for essentially.

Anually, each branch of the military recruits more people in the tens of thousands every year. I don't see the military running short on people anytime soon.

i agree that The US army is a bit overstretched at the moment but it would be wrong to brand them as toothless.

they have the best hardware in the world that exists.

moreover they have got a good training regime as well.

and lets not forget that the type of war that they are fighting(gurreila) is the one which involves lots of hardships and the casualty rate can be quite high so it would be wrong to brand them as toothless in current circumstances.

If you look at the manning requirements, you would see that the army is currently under strength that is why the Congress is planning on reinstating the draft.
