because the owners are lazy & don't wash them or their beds.

If you dislike the normal smell of a dog, or are super sensitive to the way they smell, get a short haired dog and use lightly scented wipes (baby wipes or pet wipes).
Dogs that smell a lot have usually been out in the rain or wallowing in something. They exude oil through their pores and they have two coats of fur, that trap this odor.
Wet dogs can be dried off with a vigorous towel rubbing then use the wipe.
It is not good to bath a dog more than once a month as their natural oils will be washed away (unless they've rolled in tar or mud).

Goes back to their very nature of identification as a pack animal in the wild before domestication etc..
If your dog smells particularly bad / offencive then simply pop into the local vet and either use a general animal shampoo or specialist product if the smell is not typical of a normal dog smell!
Another tip, ensure your dog is 100% absolutely dry after been outside in water or rain or after washing, this will greatly reduce the onset of any bad smells!

If you are talking about their body odour as opposed to their olfactory sense, the easiest way to stop them smelling is to take care of them properly.
Regular grooming is the answer. You should only need to bath your dog if he has rolled in something which makes him smell.
Even the cleanest dog smells when he is too hot or wet and hot, but, hey, don't we all! Try working in a confined place with a whole lot of sweaty people or sitting next to someone who hasn't showered for a couple of days or someone who ate garlic yesterday.
The Japanese have the reputation of being the cleanest, most hygienic nation. They think all Westerners smell of dead animals and sour milk.
I haven't asked my dogs what they think of the way we all smell but the clue might be in the way they can track us with such ease.

Some dogs have less of the "doggy" odor than others. Siberian Huskies, for instance are not pungent to the smell. Smaller dogs like Shi Tzus, Bichon Frises, Papillons, and Maltese, despite their need for intense grooming, are fairly odorless and quite cuddly as well.
I had Labrador Retrievers as a child. Almost every week, we caught them tearing open the garbage and rolling in it. They also have a tendency to catch and kill a rabbit or other small game. After it is dead, they may roll in the blood and carcass.
Dogs, out of instinct, will try to mask their own odor when they are outside of their own territory. It is a deep rooted instinct that comes from the part of them which descended from the wolf. Your dog, if he sees you as the alpha, sees your home as YOUR territory, not his. He may be trying to appease you by smelling like anything other than a potential rival.

I feel the same way! I have recently discovered that there is a such thing as "odorless" breeds ,greyhounds being one of them. I also found that there are Shed-free dogs breeds were shedding is minimal. also the doggie smell on most breeds is due to poor diet and bacteria. So if you have a doggie with a bad smell. Try bathing him more often and changing his diet.

Dogs shouldn't have such a strong smell that they are offensive, smells from various parts of their body can be one sign of illness.
If a dog or its pee smells of pear drops, acetone or nail polish remover it needs to see the vet.
If its breath smells it needs to have its teeth cleaned and descaled. You can clean their teeth every day with a soft toothbrush and mild mint or special dog toothpaste.
If its ears smell they need to see the vet.
As long as they get a good grooming every day they don't usually smell unless they are wet; or have rolled in or eaten something disgusting.

I have two black labs and they dont smell at all, well unless they have gone for a swim in the river. You need to bath them more often mate. I bath my dogs once every three weeks and they are fine.

Not all breeds have that "doggie" smell. If you like dogs and want one, look into getting a hypoallergenic dog, like a poodle, shih -tzu or Bichon. Their fur is made of hair and does not have that doggie smell.

Do you mean they smell or that you smell them? I know my dogs just love to read pee-mail when I walk them (smell the pee left by other dogs). This is their communication. But, if you want to keep your dog from smelling bad to you, it is best to keep them inside and wash them regularly.

if you groom them and wash them regularly, they dont smell so bad, its when you let them out, they tend to love muddy areas, along with puddles, pools and rivers.. I used to have a dog he died, however he was a very good obdient dog.. id treat him for to a doggy parlour and he loved it. ive seen some dogs be stinking and never treated or handled properly with general care of washing/grooming.. Its such a shame when they turn out like that.
