My school year was always 180 days exactly.
In California a lot of the school systems went to year-round school, but now they're going back to the regular schedule because it was a pain.
There is more than enough time in seven hours a day for 180 days (or even 175) to learn your stuff. Most homeschool kids rank in the 70th percentile or higher on standardized tests, and a lot of them are finished with their work by lunch time!

Kids (and adults) need time to regroup, relax, spend unstructured time with family and friends, travel, and just explore life in a non-school setting. I think extending the school year would defeat what little time kids get to be kids by having them "put time in" just for the sake of it.
As a teacher, I will tell you that this time of year there is not very much quality learning going on, anyway. We're wrapping up the year and getting excited for the break that lies ahead. I really think if the school year was extended, it wouldn't improve the quality of education...it would just prolong the "Is it summer yet?" crazies!
We go 180 days and that's plenty! :)

I think the school year is long enough already.
The kids need a break , so they can have some fun and relax. I am sure the teachers also need some time to relax as well. There are extra activity books and projects that can be done on family time, so it is a learning time and a fun time as well. So kids can get a little quality time with Mom and Dad.

I think schools should be year round. I am a teacher, and kids lose a lot of information over the long summer break. Plus, the break is sort of wasted anyway--after a few weeks, how much can you really enjoy yourself anyway? (I remember just sitting around being really bored during most of the summer.)
I used to work in a year-round school. Before I worked there, I thought year-round was just plain mean to kids! But when I found out how it worked and actually experienced it, I felt like we had TONS of time off (even though it was actually the same number of days). We started the school year in August. We went to school for 9 weeks, then had a break for 3 weeks. Then 9 weeks in school again, and 3 weeks off, etc. 3 weeks seemed like the perfect amount of time to be off--you could forget about school for awhile, but it didn't really give you enough time to be bored. And 9 weeks on was great. Just when you're getting sick of school, it's almost over for awhile. And we still had slightly longer breaks over Christmas and Summer. I loved it! I wish the schools around my house did a year round schedule!

No I do not think the school year should be extended. I think the school year is just fine. I have a 10 year old son & he will attend the 5th grade starting in august.
Kids need the holidays & school breaks. It gives them time to relax & collect themselves mentaly & for personal growth. Then need the time to enjoy other activities such as camps & sports.

well im a mother of 6 and 5 of my kids school year was 180 days , now where im at the grade schools have what they call year round , and depending on the location of your schoool ie district city etc , it varies on the track when they get out and go back to school , i have one son in grade school he will attend his last day of fourth grade will be june 29 2006 but then the new school year for his track will be on july 5th 2006 , but his siblings well the other 4 that live at home will be on a regular school year schedule (2 in jr high and 2 in high school ) which there school year ends june 22 and they go back september the the 6th or somew here around there , but then my son who is in grade schhol will get a 6 week break from school but not from school work sence they send home off track home work which most teachers want ti done he will get out arond the 3rd week of september adn go back around the second week of november , then he wont get another 6 week break untill the end of march and then he will return the first week of may , i dont mind the longer schhol year or the track thingy to much but what gets me is when there on break they make manatory off track home work for the kids to where techanally there school year is all year long except hlidays , winter break , spring break etc , so know 170 to 180 days of schhol is enough especially when theres only 365 days in a year and take away the weekends etc there in school for ever

Perhaps, a new series of medals could be developed for schools, which seem not to developing a nation of civic minded individuals who are here to be civic minded. Part of the problem is a lack of courses on civics, public responsibilities, voting, democracy and why our brand ours is failing. A huge chunk is missing about morals and ethics.
A longer day should encompass these topics sop we produce a nation for people who avoid drugs and alcohol, WHO are not abused by parents....a school system which can offer counseling each term ongoing for all pupils to promote mental health.
Yes, a longer school day by one hour and a half. One full period off to do homework, go for counseling see friends, whatever. Socialization is very important. One period each day for topics above.
Not a longer school year, only a longer school day.

School is just the right length in Canada ~ and I personally think that everywhere should have the same school year.
180 days ~ start the Tuesday after Labour Day and end in June.

Our school year is 186 days. I feel that year around school or more school days is a bad idea. Students should have a definite breack between grade levels, and need a few weeks of rest. Their lives are so busy that they too need a vacation.

The school year should not be extended. Students need time to be with their family and friends. Students need different experiences to prepare them for life. They need time to be kids.
Teachers need time to decompress from the school year and spend time with their family who tend to be neglected during the school year.
