i would assume that 1/2 part sugar would mean half of whatever else is in the recipe. in cooking if it says 1/2 part sugar and 1/2 part salt--- you would put say 1 cup sugar and 1 cup salt... or if there were other ingredients you would want half of it to be the 1/2 is calling for. hope this helps.

This measure is referencing basic proportions. Like if you start with a one cup measure -- the recipe measurements that would be using would be based "proportionately" on the parts or "volume" of the one cup.
So, if a recipe says mix 1 part water with 1/2 part lime juice --using a cup, that would mean 1 cup water and 1/2 cup lime juice.
If you chose to use a bathtub as the measurement container, it would be one bathtub full of water and 1/2 bathtub full of lemon juice. Recipes written this way allow you to make the recipe in any amount you choose -- as long as you strictly follow the proportions listed and use one container or volume measure.

It's half of whatever you're measuring with. Say it calls for one part rum, 1/2 part sugar, 2 parts club soda.....and let's say you're making a serving....then you might use a shot glass and add one shot glass of rum, 1/2 shot glass of sugar, etc.

Cheers!

I just saw the other responses above. They're wrong! Half a glass of sugar??? Come on.

It's 1/2 of the total ingredients that will go into whatever size container you're using.
Example: With a quart jar, fill it up half-way with sugar. The remaining half quart will be filled with the remainder of the called-for ingredient(s).
