It has a comforting placebo effect. If you are given 7-up by someone who cares every time you are sick -- it will come to be a symbol of love and comfort and will then make you feel a bit better. On the practical side - any non caffeinated drink will replenish fluids and prevent you from becoming dehydrated from vomiting or fwvwr.

The 7Up is carbonated and the bubbles calm your stomach down. It's also not caffinated like other sodas which can make you sicker by adding sugar into your body. Sprite is also a good choice. You can also drink flat Pepsi or Coke.

oddly enough, my Mom always gave me flat 7up. Since in this case the carbonation wasn't the benefit, I think the drink would give you an easily digestible supply of sugar for energy replenishment. A short term solution, but it may make you feel better for a little while.

Because you need to rehydrate when you are ill. Pop with caffeine in it causes you to become even more dehydrated, so that is why they give you 7-Up or ginger-ale. Let it get slightly flat before drinking it if you have the "stomach flu", or it will upset your stomach more with the carbonation. Pedialyte is best to drink when you're sick for putting electrolytes back in your system.
Soup helps to rehydrate, is fairly mild (depending on what you put in it) and doesn't aggravate nausea. It gives you nutrients you need as well. If you have the stomach flu, (which is gastroenteritis), eating chicken soup with rice in it will help get rid of diarrhea. Plus, it's good comfort food.

It was probably what she was given when she was sick. I got the same thing when I was a child. I still crave seven up when I am REALLY sick! :) I think they are trying to be gentle to your stomach, the carbonation in the soda helps tummies feel better and soup is gentle on the tummy too.

My parents always had me drink 7up as well. I think maybe they think the carbonation will settle your stomach.

7-up will help calm your stomach. Some use ginger ale (I hate that stuff). Also toast is good if you don't want soup. (It;s not good for a stomach flu anyway.) Ice chips instead of glasses of water are good. Drinking fluids + vomiting = MORE vomiting. You don't want to dehydrate, so have ice chips instead or suck on those electrolyte freeze pops.

7-up and sports drinks are recommended by doctors usually when your having stomach problems. Water will just give you the runs. but if you don't have stomach problems, you don't need to drink that.
soup is when sick people are too lazy and weak to chew. and its hearty. comfort foods are best when you're sick
