An "eye for an eye" is the maximum punishment. In other communities at the time, you could be killed for accidentally taking out someone's eye. The Old Testament forbids a harsher punishment. Jewish law is much the same as the law of our land. If you were to shoot out someone's eye with a BB gun, is it okay to take your life? No. A judge will determine exactly how you must make amends for the accident. If you did it deliberately, the punishment will be harsher, but never more than the original crime.

It is easy to misunderstand this passage. The passage of Exodus 21:15-35 is not a passage for individual conduct. It is a passage for the government of Israel and its judges. It contains a statement of the principle of fairness and a limit on retaliation. In the Latin language it is called "lex tallionis" or the law of retaliation.

The question as stated is difficult to answer outright. It's not something that has ever been tested (and I'm glad of that). So it really comes down to matter of opinion. Not to mention that when this was said (by Confucius I believe), it was to metaphorically point out a flaw in the mentality of revenge. It also reflects (metaphorically) that forgiveness is more beneficial to society than revenge.

no. it makes two people blind. the one who the crime was against and the criminal.

Following "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind" to its logical extent would lead you to believe there should be no punishment for any crime! Think about it...

A misunderstood verse.

It means that you should make good by means of the same thing that caused loss.

If I wreck your car (1 eye), I should replace your car (1 eye).
