I think everybody else nailed this question as far as supplies go. I cannot, however, stress enough that you get your kitten a scratching post or a tall cat tree (ideal) and a claw clipper. Teach your cat while it's young where the proper place to scratch is and it will never mess with your furniture. And learn from your vet the proper way to trim your cat's claws. If you start them while they're young and do it properly, they won't mind it at all. Declawing is cruel.
Kittens are also bundles of tireless energy. Provide it with lots and lots of toys or it will make toys out of things you don't want it to...like your draperies, your priceless Ming Dynasty vase, your plants, etc. Interactive toys are great and will help you bond with your new kitty. Good luck!

You will need kitten food (Kitten Chow) if it is a kitten or cat food if it is a cat. You will definitely need a litter pan, scoop, bucket (to put used litter in), and litter. If the cat is long haired, get a brush ( the dollar store has some nice ones). You could get some cat toys or make your own. I made all my cats a blanket. It's nice if they have their own. Some optional items are: canned cat food, cat milk, and a cat bed. You will want to purchase a carrier and eventually a collar and name tag. Don't forget to kitten proof your home. The kitten will want to get into everything.

Get food first, be aware of the age of the cat when buying it, kittens need more than adults because they are growing. Get it a variety of toys, they like ones with cat nip, buy some loose cat nip and put it in a shallow box so it can roll in it. Buy it litter and a litterbox, and get a scooper to clean it out. Canned food and treats are good too. Beyond all the basics, tons of TLC!!

Litter box, food and water bowls, cat food, cat snacks, cat toys, scratch pole and water pistol - the water pistol is very important for training in case there are areas where you don't want the cat to be - like the kitchen counter - I would come in and find my kitty on the stove! Being that it was a gas stove I worried she would lite her tail on fire! So I put a water pistol on the window sill and whenever I'd catch her up there I give her a squirt! She soon learned to associate the stove with water in the face and stopped jumping up there! Works great for countertops as well - Good Luck

Milk is a good one if its a kitten. But you will need litter box kit it has all the essentials, food, toys and a scratcher so it won't do a number on your furniture, a place to sleep and nail clippers people like to use soft paws I don't recommend it my cat kept getting his nails stuck everywhere and he would be hanging everywhere with his nails stuck.

If you live near a wal-mart they sell starter kits that include liter box, food bowl, water bowl, liter box liners, and a liter scoop. you will also need liter, and a few toys. They have one toy that seems to be popular with kittens, it a plastic wand with a rubber string attached to it and on the end it has either tassels or feathers with a small bell. The also have some little balls with bells in them and some little stuffed babies that have small amounts of catnip in them.

Along with the obvious things, get some great cat toys. Mine like those furry mice (catnip inside), those make them play for hours, super balls (bounce really high), and catnip pillows (small) which they really go nuts for. If the cat is stressed, get Feliaway, it's a sprayable "hormone" (odorless) that helps the cat feel more relaxed and content..the stuff really works!

Litter box and filler
Water and food dishes
toys
a scracthing post or box
a cat bed?
Then go from there and see what you new kitten or cat likes and does not like.
Mine has a feather toy on a stick and that is her favorite.
