Depends on whether you specialize and where you are at. You can see if there are stats on the www.avma.org for actual income statistics. On average, I think some of the LVT/ RVT's I used to work with made ~ $30,000/yr with health insurance and continuing education but that was an emergency referral practice.

Oh don't plan on living on it. I have been a Vet Tech for 17 years and I couldn't survive on the pay. You make less at a small vet hospital, more at a large one, but cost of living for the area has to be taken into account. You can make more in salary, but no benefits, or less in salary and some benefits. Vets are cheap. Really, they all are. I worked at a research facitity for 4 years and made very good money. You need to take research animal as a minor in school and sit for that exam also....and research is not for everyone. But it is more money. If you planned to work for a vet in private practice, do not bother with a 4 year program. You will have a ton in loans and still be making squat. A lot of vets hire off the street and train their own tech and that way they can pay them less!!!!
Good luck!!!!

Really location is secondary its the practice that decides it. I am a vet tech and make 18 per hour plus free exams for all my animals and 50% off ANY medical service for them, 401K plan, insurance, vacation and sick days. My employer is one of the best vets I have ever been in contact with and I am NEVER leaving this job I love the people and the clients and of course the animals! Don't feel bad if you have to try a few clinics before you find the right fit:)

I agree with what california_w said. I was hired fresh off the street with no experience or training, told that everyone learns from the bottom up, and paid minimum wage at a practice in Missouri. They had me gloved up and assisting in surgery the first week! And also helping with grooming, which I had never done before. Customers, be forewarned.

It likely depends on your area, but in Oregon they begin at $12 per hour, and can get to $16 or so.
