Religious leaders wear costumes, often so they are recognized as such. The only special power that is gives them is kind of a "you are dressed as good referral (or leader, what have you) - we'll listen to you" from those of the same faith. I don't think god even sees the clothes - wouldn't god only be concerned with your soul, your heart, your essence as it were?
Religions ask their followers to wear religious accessories as reminders of their faith. The catholic is reminded of his faith when he touches his rosary beads or touches the cross or saint pendant he wears, the islamic woman rembers chastity as she fully covers her body before she leaves the house. I think religions also think that wearing religious symbols encourage like minded to recognize each other and even to convert others - and they may be right.
Patriotism also wears a costume - colonial clothes, red white and blue stuff - as do sports fans.

Why do policement wear uniforms? Would anybody take them seriously if they wore civilian clothes. Would anybody take a lawyer seriously if he/she wore shorts and a hawaiian shirt?
Would anybody take a priest seriously if they did not wear costumes? It is all for the mind. It reinforces the belief and feeling. It is just a mental projection. It is effective. I am sure one would feel a difference between wearing a sackcloth while as a monk as opposed to wearing jeans. Because wearing a sackcloth helps the mind detach from clothes. The mind can become attached to what we wear, like oh those are and comfy pants, I like this color, etc. The mind should be on God 24/7 in order to keep it empty for God to fill. It is good to eliminate anything that would distract the mind, so that is why they were these types of clothes.

So we can identify the religious groups that are so far from God's word.
God sees everyone and everything we do. He never asked us to put on special clothes, or costume like articles, he just wants our hearts to turn to him and obey his word. I've read the bible many times and haven't found a disciple that followed Jesus that was asked to wear a costume of any kind. Everything that was asked of us to do is a heart decision.

First, I don't feel that the person feels that they are wearing costumes. Costumes are for play acting, or other types of non spiritual activities.
I do feel that a person may feel they are honoring their relationship with their religion when they are dressed as such. Usually, it is related to respect, tradition, and faith. It has nothing to do with "God" seeing us, but rather how we respect "Him". I only put quotations to show this with respect to my personal beliefs.

Ancient pagan custom. It impresses the weak minded. God sees us 24/7. He hears us 24/7. He records every thing 24/7. SMILE YOUR ON GOD CAMERA!
