"The Camera"
"The Negative"
"The Print"
by Ansel Adams.
These have almost everything you need to know about the technical side of photography (minus some details specific to digital).
The artistic side is a little more vague, there as many paths as there are photographers.

Hi. I just finished taking a photography class, and the textbook was rather dry. If you have a computer available to you for installing software, try Canon's Photography Workshop software. I got it on sale on amazon for three dollars! It is great for learning the basics of SLR photography.
For books, check out any books by Ansel Adams that is not a picture book. Good luck!

Depends on if you want to do true photography with a 35mm SLR or are you talking digital? I found that studying the Ansel Adams. But to get the basics out of the way I studied Kodak. But remember learn the basics then apply your own style to your photographs - makes them more personal that way.
