I have three main rules in my classroom.....
1. Treat others as you would want to be treated.(golden rule)
2. You are responsible for your stuff and your space. (teaches responsibility)
3. BE HONEST no matter what
this one can only be enforced if a parent remains a safe place to be honest. Be careful not to punsih your kids for being honest. Work out discipline ideas with them so they understand that the punishment is not because they told the truth but because of what they did wrong. Honesty is a very hard habit to create. It has to be an understanding and forgiving environment.

I think the three main rules that kids should have from their parents are to speak and act with:
1. Respect (for their parents, teachers, friends, and themselves)
2. Truth (Speak it with kindness)
3. Confidence (should have confidence in their ability to become worthwhile, productive members of society)

... bet this isn't the answer you thought you'd get....

I guess they should be age appropriate, but I think:
1) Have an open line of communication with your parents no matter what. Talk to parents about ANYTHING.
2) No drugs or alcohol until you are of age.
3) Work for what you get - whether it be a cell phone or a car, learning now to be responsible will help greatly in the future.

Let parents know where they are (when going out with friends or any events), in case something happens and they need to contact each other.

Don't break any laws, including illegal drug use, harassment, theft, violence, road violations, etc., even if the parent commits those crimes. Too many children copy their parents' bad qualities, and justify their actions with their parents' poor example. (Likewise, parents need to be good role models if their children look up to them.)

Watch one's health and choose a healthy lifestyle, especially here in the US with the growing problem of child obesity (that leads to various health problems later in life), the readily available fast foods and junk foods that mass media advertisements promote, and the constant media images of perfectly sexy models that drive adolescents to low self-esteem and dangerous dieting. Thus this rule would include having the children eat healthy, get exercise (as in, not "staying in the house all the time"), and not be overly influenced into drastically changing their bodies just to as attractive as showbiz celebrities.
