I am a hispanic and have been in the Marines for 20 years now so I think I have a little experience on this subject. No, the military is not racist. In fact, the opposite is true.
There are; however, some racist people in the military, just as there are just about any other kind of people you can imagine. The beauty about the military is that is a melting pot so you have everybody working alongside all kinds of people.
I don't remember experiencing racism and the opportunities are many to achieve your dreams! I would do it all over again and join the military if I was 20 year old...
Hope this helps and good luck in your career...Semper Fi

There is racism everywhere. There is racism and discrimination in the military. It is not that bad but it is there. Go to the airforce. I think you will like it. It is more laid back...kinda like civilian life. I wanted to join when I left the army but they would not take prior service.

Racism is everywhere, but honestly, I think it is less predominate in the military...especially after you get out of basic training. Racism is often a product of very narrow life experiences. In the military, you are exposed to different cultures, ways of life, and thinking. You quickly learn that the biases you grew up with aren't necessarily based on the way things really are. You also learn that you have to rely on your fellow soldiers/airmen to survive. That creates relationship bonds that are incompatible with hatred. Consequently, the longer you are in the military the less racist you become and the more open-minded you are to other peoples and cultures.

No one will give you a direct answer to that question but keep in mind, there are stupid people every where you go. If you have your heart set on the military then you should follow your feelings. In the military the only way things are going to be either good or bad depends on you and your attitude.

To answer your question yes and no. There is discrimination everywhere, even the military. On the service there is not a lot of racism, but for certain ethnic groups it may be a little more discrimination. (example anyone of the same ethnic group as enimies we may be fighting) But please remember our military if VERY DIVERSE, so don't let the thought of discrimation scare you. Everyone is pretty equal in basic anyway

yes there is racism in the military just because you go through boot camp and get training telling you that its wrong doesnt mean people are going to listen. You take people from all over this country and world for that matter and put them in a big mixing pot. Its gonna happen and it happens everyday in the military.

The military is a reflection of society, so yes it is. However, you lose many rights while you are in the military regarding your citizenship(which is a good thing You'll find out later) so you can't just say and act like a jerk as you would as a civilian. Things are much more under control and very livable.

sorry to burst your bubble yes there is, but on the good side most don't act upon it, but there are the same issues in the military as there is anywhere, murder, hate crimes, domestics disputes. If it happens off base it happens on base. big differance? Media don't have access to military bases.

nope. the military is like one big family, and there's no descrimination. you'll make a lot of buddies there. there used to be a lot of racism but once the people realized that everyone is looking for each other they straightened up.
