Just one of those things. Redional dialect is fascinating. We call them beanies here, while Canadians call them toques.

Stocking caps are not the same as toques or watch caps or beanie hats or whatever you want to call them. You don't often see stocking caps anymore. They were a pull on (or tie on) winter hat that had a really long tail, resembling a stocking. You could actually wrap it round your neck so it did double duty as a scarf. I think perhaps they lost favour when it became obvious that they were a safety hazard for skiers and small children.

I know that illustrations show "stocking caps" as the above-named toques etc. but just the ones with the long tails were the real stocking caps. And I know this because I wore them as a kid and a teenager.

This is just a guess, but they probably originally called them 'toboggan caps' because they're caps worn while tobogganing and just dropped the 'caps' over time. I personally wear a toque while toboganning... :)

I live in the south and cannot answer that. But I have often wondered why stocking caps were called stocking caps. I mean stocking go on the legs. Right? I have heard them called watch caps too. So semantics will prevail as my final answer.

The south has its own slang. A paper sack is a Poke
A soft drink is a dope. This away means to the right / Thataway means to the left. I don't know abour toboggan propably because you wore it in the winter sled riding.
