i have never heard of that but is it anymore odd than thinking jesus, a man who never even visited europe, was somehow european looking? Odds are jesus looked more like Sadam Hussein or bin laden than he did the frail hippie looking figure most accept without question

What?
It might simply stem from the tradition of portraying Jesus according to the culture a person belongs to. Iconography from China portrays Jesus looking very Chinese. I've seen Stations of the Cross from Africa where Jesus appears very African. We're all familiar with the "white" Jesus of Renaissance Art. When St. Jean de Brebeuf came to Canada as a missionary back in the 1600s, he reworked the Christmas story into a framework that the native Hurons would understand.

Jesus isn't the Messiah of just one people group, but of all of us, and as such, each different society's art reflects an image of Jesus according to their culture, while recognising that historically, Jesus was a 1st century Jew.

African Americans do not think that Jesus was a black man any more than Irish Americans think Jesus was Irish.
Jesus was a Jew and would have resembled the Jews of his time. But people like to represent him as looking like them to help them identify with him.

Haven't you ever wondered how/why Jesus got blue eyes & dirty blonde hair?
