THE DAUNTING QUESTION

How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?

This has been on the minds of many since the original 1970 television commercial posed the question. Like in the commercial featuring the owl, not many people can wait long enough to get to the center without chomping down on it. However, more scientific studies have been conducted to determine this pondering enigma.

252 LICKS

A group of engineering students at Purdue University applied their weird science to the Tootsie Pop riddle and devised a licking machine to determine the truth. Modeled after a human tongue, it took an average of 364 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Tootsie Pop. They then sampled the results from 20 real life volunteers and found that the average licks from both studied resulted in 252 licks.

WAIT A MINUTE...144 LICKS

A group of students at Swathmore Junior High School decided to take matters into their own hands and conducted their own scientific experiment and found that it took an average 144 licks to get to the center. Perhaps the vast difference between the two students might lie with either the natural digestive abilities of saliva or human persistence at a given task. Most likely a combination of both is why humans are better than machines when it comes to dishing out licks.

SORRY BOB ... DIDN'T MEAN TO REPEAT YOUR ANSWER ... IT WASN'T THERE WHEN I FIRST LOOKED ... LOL

We are aware of three studies that have been conducted. Each group contacted us to inform us of the results of their experiments:
A group of engineering students from Purdue University recorded that their licking machine, modeled after a human tongue, took an average of 364 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. They tried the same licking test on 20 volunteers and found that the average licks to the center were 252 licks.

Plans for the Purdue licking machine

A chemical engineering doctorate student from the University of Michigan recorded that his licking machine required an average of 411 licks per Tootsie Pop.
A group of students at Swathmore School used human lickers in a scientific experiment and determined it took an average of 144 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop.

Based on the wide range of results from these scientific studies, it is clear that the world may never know how many licks it really takes to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop.

None. You can get to the center by smashing the tootsie pop with a hammer. After that choice, you can regulate the licks and decide yourself how many it takes.

You just need to try licking a tootsie pop because where one lick is different.

Infinite, because as you lick a toostie pop the center changes. If you are just talking to the chocolate center then two hundred.
