I wondered that same thing. According to my husband Goofy is not a dog, he's a Goofy. I think he's a Disney creation. And Pluto is a dog who's owner is a mouse. Leave it to Disney and don't try to make too much sense of it. Children's movies/cartoons rarely make sense.

I think you all are misunderstanding him. He wasn't asking about the planet Pluto, but the dog in the Disney franchise. I believe he means since Mickey and Goofy have been anthropomorphasized (taken on human characteristics, when they are in face animals) how come Pluto hasn't as well. I'm 21 and many a year ago my older brothers and I got into the same argument. I understand what your saying, but Pluto is just a dog. Disney for some reason decided Goofy would be able to talk and Pluto wouldn't. For the same reason Goofy wears clothes and lives in a house with his son Max and Pluto lives in a dog house, wears ONLY a collar and is a pet for a mouse, Mickey. They are both essentially assumed to be dogs, one just remained clearly a domesticated dog. There's some thought out there that Goofy is just Goofy, not a dog at all---just Goofy. He has 4 fingers and a thumb, just like humans and Pluto has paws. Disney has never had him bark that I can remember. Weird. Read the 2nd link about that. Hope this helps.

The answer to 'what' is Pluto: a planet
Pluto as a 'who' is either the Greek god of the underworld, or in the Disney world, a dog. As a kid, I was never confused about Pluto--Goofy was the one I wasn't sure about.

Pluto is a pet dog, and therefore he is inferior to Goofy, a friend of Mickey's who walks upright. It could be that Pluto is a less evolved form of dog than Goofy.

Yes the movie "Stand By Me" was a good one. I liked it very much and have watched it a number of times. I think Pluto is a dog as well.

I think you messed up your question. Pluto is obviously a dog. The real question is, "What is Goofy?" I have no idea.

Pluto is a planet. However, if you are referring to the Disney character, then it is a dog. If you are talking mythology, Pluto is a god.
