How many people think that some of the fines and penalties given to people who are caught with small amounts of marijuana are ridiculous. Some of these people are getting longer jail sentences than rapists and other hard criminals. What's funny to me is that about 80 to 90% of the cops, district attorneys, and judges that are doing this have smoked it themselves and if they had been treated the same, they would not be in the positions they are in now.

I think the punishments should fit the crime. You are correct that there has been stiffer sentences handed out for drugs than for violent crimes. Different states have their own interpretations of what a small amount of marijuana is, and have their own laws regarding it. For some less than an ounce for recreational use with no distribution intent charge is a petty misdemeanor while other states are quite stringent. Bottom line though, as long as no one else was affected by their use, make the punishment fit the crime and focus on reducing violence by handing out stiffer penalties for that.

Yes I do. My son was recently busted in the state of Iowa with < than a bowl full. He requested a deferred judgment & got one but was ordered to have a drug eval which costs plenty. They won't ever change the law though. That's how most municipalities get their money.
