Ask her to take you to get it done professionally.
She is right tho, chances are you will end up cutting it all off.

I HAVE BEEN THERE! I have naturally unruly hair. The key is to use a thicken conditioner and deep condition as often as possible. Right when you get out of the shower use a leave in conditioner. Comb it straight and braid it or pull in back into a bun for it to dry. This way you can either leave it slightly curly or it makes straightening it after SO much easier. Also don't wash your hair everyday. It dries it out and will make your hair even bigger. Longer hair styles are better because they are heavier. The biggest thing is take time to figure your hair out. I didn't get mine under control till I was 20. But those are some of the tricks I've found that work. honestly, stay away from the perms they DESTROY your hair and wit thick hair they will actually make your hair harder to manage, trust me, been there too.

Getting a perm isn't all its cracked up to be, I have thick hair and a relaxer (known in slang terms sometimes as a "perm") and yes it DOES make my hair less thick and puffy, easier to flat iron, and helps maintain the straightness longer than just flat ironing alone would, but at a price...
You MUST keep your hair conditioned and moisturized or your hair will be "ruined" by it...if you want to deal with the hassle of getting a relaxer EVERY 2 weeks to a month (depending on your hair) it is best that you get one done professionally, "box perms" are more likely to cause damage to your hair...also in between salon visits use a hair moisturizer daily or several times a week to keep the chemical from drying out your hair (I use Mizani Rose H2O about twice a week and Olive Oil Oil Sheen almost everyday to keep my hair hydrated)...anytime you wash your hair use a good conditioner...I've found "wrapping" your hair daily (or "nightly" actually before you go to bed) and tying it with a silk scarf is an ESSENTIAL part of maintaining relaxer...it keeps the hair straight and keeps it from breaking...however at first wrapping your hair is a very tedious process, after a while you'll get used to it...
In conclusion, as a young person I know how bad it may seem that your mom won't let you get a "perm", and I hate to take sides, but your mom is only looking out for the health of your hair! Once you get a relaxer, it seems like a constant battle to keep your hair healthy, much like adding color too it...a relaxer is a CHEMICAL a chemical strong enough to straighten hair and can even leave "scalp burns"...it drys out hair...end of story! Besides, just imagine how many woman YEARN to have "natural" "chemically-untreated" hair?! If your mom STILL wont let you have a perm, try a straightening balm (I've heard John Frieda "Frizz Ease" is pretty good, but ask around) after you flat iron, hot comb your hair, to keep it straight, and WRAP It at night to help maintain the sleekness of it...also as expensive as it is ( about $12) Aveda Anti Humectant Pomade keeps the humidity from making iron straightened hair "poofy".

First, if you are african american you probably aren't getting a perm.
If you want straight hair it's a relaxer.
If you get one, a kiddy relaxer will be best at first just because its a little weaker and you may be less likely to lose hair.
You can lose some hair if it's not done properly. You want to use a regular relaxer but you can use coarse in kiddy relaxers if your hair strands are thick and almost hard. You have to put a lot more work into processed hair too.Get a flat iron or straighting comb if your moms not having the relaxer so its easier to manage. There are really cute natural styles too.Try some before you go overboard with the relaxer thing.

When i was younger my mom permed my hair which is the urban word for relaxer and when she stopped my hair fell out. i have thick hair but i use Nexxus products which are rich in moisture and dudleys hair grease, after i blow it out piece by piece i bump it with a remington bumper that takes a minute to get hot, then i wrap it and use duck bill clips to hold it in place followed by a silk scarf.

Well...I grew out my relaxer and my hair was a lot healthier. But I definitely understand where you're coming from. Get your hair done professionally and let them know it'd be your first relaxer. Talk to friends of the family to find a good beautician.
Your hair should come out alright, but there are no guarantees. Let your mom know you have to make your own decisions/mistakes. Just be sure you don't over-process your hair.
You can grow it out later (it's a process) if you like.

at only 12 its ALOT to maintain a "perm" (relaxer) without to expensive help of a professional salon, or your mom (who doesnt want you to get one in the 1st place)...i say try a straightening pomade/ balm/serum (whatever, ask about a good one for your hair type) to keep it straighter longer (so you wont have to do it EVERYDAY), just press/ flat iron it, and wrap it at night...atleast till your bout 14 or READY to keep up with a perm...cuz if you dont keep up with it you hair will get "ruined"

If Mom says no - it's no - don't argue - when you get older, have your own money and want to risk your hair - go for it - but hopefully you will have learned something from Mom by then!

Wash your hair - towel dry it - braid it while still damp - leave it alone until completely dry - pull through your hair with fingers to loosen braid - so mom how nice it looks all wavier.
