Most people that resort to chat rooms for socialization do so because they are self conscious about themselves and don't feel that they "fit in" as who they really are. It's easier for them to hide behind a computer screen and lie about their appearance, or economical status, or education than it is to admit the truth about themselves. Sadly, the truth is usually not as bad as the person believes it to be, and the more they lie about themselves the worse they feel about who they really are. Society needs to be more welcoming to people of all types before some people can feel at peace in their own skin. Those that feel the need to lie deserve our sympathy, not our disgust.

A lot of the models and such are actually bots. The bots are there advertising websites, they aren't real people. As for me, I've never lied about myself in a chatroom, my self esteem isn't so low that I need some random stranger to think I'm pretty. That and I already have a bf that thinks I'm pretty. So yeah, there are a lot of bots in the chatrooms.

Because that's the beauty of the cyberworld... you can be whatever you want to be depending on who you are chatting with. In reality, honesty is the number one thing anyone can lack online, especially for those who are that unhappy with who they really are... Others have just been seriously lied to themselves and really do believe that they are models and sexy... everyone has a different idea as to what is sexy and what isn't.

Some people have low self esteem. They feel better lying about there appearence because it leads to compliments, and it makes them feel good about themselves. Some people lie about their appearence because using a chatroom is kind of like becoming that "fantasy person".

Some people feel like they can be whomever they wanna be online. So they make up their identities. Some people also like to have fun messing with other people's minds. They get a kick out of it. Every single person has their own reasons to lie about their lives. We just need to be careful at who we talk to.

because they can be and look like who ever they wish in a chat room that is their fantasy world where everything is perfect for them no one can see them and chances are they never will but i agree why lie you are who you are and looks are only skin deep i had much rather be around a nice talking person with a sense of humor than a snob that only brags on them self and what they have

Very simple. Every one has some complex. If they are beautiful, they think they are fat. Other way, if they are skinny they are not beautiful.
Always people like to look at beautiful things. They don't want anything depressed or ugly things. People things about good and beautiful things. They will not think depressed (That is why a lot of depression studies)

To stand out, to be more attractive - this desire is in genes of any species, including humans. Those who weren't/didn't want to be attractive could not pass their genes through generations even if they were fit. Only standouts could have off-springs, including people in the chat rooms :)
