If you have to recommend someone who's visiting LA in the summer we have the beach, obviously.
There's also Universal Studios, and you can even try being in the audience in a TV or Game show by checking "audiences unlimited".. If you are daring, try getting tickets for the Tonight Show or the Jimmy Kimmel show. You got to get there early but its fun and worth the time.
LA has the X-games in August at the staples center or catch a baseball game at Dodgers Stadium.
The Chinese Theater in Hollywood Blvd has the famous hand prints, and if you're in town for a movie premiere, check out the celebrities walking down the red carpet.
LA has historical places to visit and ethnic places like China town and Olvera (little Mexico) Street. You can also go and see the expensive shops on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills or the famous Farmer's Market near the CBS studios.
If you like Comedy you can check out one of the many comedy clubs on the Sunset Strip, check out the Hustler store, and if you are near the Flynt Publications building, sometimes you can see Larry Flynt's limo (you really can't miss the naked woman painted on the limo!).
If you wish to venture south to Orange County, there's Disneyland, Angels Stadium (Angels baseball), and you can visit the beach area like Huntington Beach, where many surf competition occur there. Plus, its the "OC" where you can see the real OC (well according to MTV) Laguna Beach.
Further south of the OC is San Diego, which is about 1 1/2 to 2 hrs south of LA. Then next to San Diego is Mexico, which you can cross the border and take a day trip in Tijuana.
There's some of the "must see" that I would suggest to someone visiting.

I have been living in Cali for 13 years and its not that great there. But six flags is a good place but its a little away from LA. Catalina is a great place to snorkel, hike, ext. but its about $50 for a ticket to get there. Hollywood is a cool place to go until you get to the wrong part of town. But also in Hollywood is universal studios and city walk. City walk is just one big mall with a lot of goodies. The Walt Disney hall is a cool place to see but the traffics bad. A dodger game is sometimes fun to go to with cheap seats. but Its your trip so have fun.
