Children learn by example.

Children not only learn by example, but they also learn if you tell them that being disrespectful (depending on the age, you may have to explain whtat disrespectful means) is NOT allowed in your home or elsewhere and that there will be consequences if they are not respectful. I learned the hard way as a child because I came from the era where hitting a child was ok. If I was disrespectufl, rude, or didn't mind my manners, I got hit clear across the room. But, that is not acceptable these days, so taking away privileges, grounding, etc, is basically the only ways I know of to get the message across.

I don't think you can make a child do anything. If you treat a child with respect than he or she will learn to treat others with respect. Have some talks about why it's important to be nice to others and the Golden Rule concept (treat others as you would want to be treated). If this doesn't work, than you should resort to positive reinforcement. When the child does something good, praise him or her.

Set a good example yourself by modeling whatever behavior you want the child to use. Whenever they act that way, be sure to encourage them. Be sure to remind them when they misbehave, put don't just focus on that.

If it's serious enough to punish them somehow, that might help. Just make sure not to overdo it and remember that kids can forget things from time to time.

Rewards might also help, but make sure the child doesn't get a reward every time or they might expect it every time.

make rules, enforce them firmly, not rudely/forcefully/meanly. Kids respond to positive enforcement much better than nagging or bad stuff. So, when a kid is respectful, make sure they know you appreciate that behavior by thanking them or whatever, giving them a treat- just don't spoil

Respect them by giving them credit for their good decisions and reasons why their bad decisions might have ramifications they haven't though of.

I've heard from people who have children that the ABC's SUPERNANNY program is really good and has taught them a lot. Maybe it can help you too.
