city of Kyoto is amazing
in Tokyo we loved the Tsukiji fish market (our impressions below)

Yes, go to Kyoto. It is the oldest area and where the book Memoires of a Geisha was based. Go to Gion and you take a walk back into history.

The second place to visit is Nara. There are many temples around the area and some cool shopping.
I lived in Japan for 3 years and loved it.

I was in Japan in 1991 and the best thing I went and saw was The kabuki Play. I suggest you go see it if possible. I don't remember where it was but you could find out. Also they have a fireworks show somewhere new Toyoko and that is incredible as well. I really reccommend that too. Hope that helps.

Make sure you climb Mt Fuji. Quite an awesome experience...I did it twice.
