Beagles are hardly stupid, they are a preferred hunting dog and very easily trained, however they love the outdoors and are runners, so you should only consider a beagle if you have a large fenced in yard. Beagles are great with kids and are very loyal.
If your beagle seems "stupid" to some it may be the mix of 2 breeds. Anyway you look at it though, having a pet is a blessing, don't let anyone elses opinion deture you from loving and enjoying your dog.

No, Beagles are not stupid. The stupid party would be the owner. Every breed of dog is different & require different approaches to training. As with any the best thing to do is have a routine & be consistant in your training. Beagles are vocal though & howl alot. They need plenty of exercise & they love to play! Good family dog!

We have a beagle and he isn't the smartest dog in the world. He's hard to train, very stubborn, and at times destructive. However, he is very affectionate and is good with people and other dogs. I'm not sure all beagles are stupid or if it's a stupid breed. German Shepherds are known to be extremely smart but my bro & sis-in-law have one and it's the dumbest dog I've ever been around! I don't think I'd take breed into consideration too seriously to determine intelligence.

No it is not. I have 3 beagles and each one has their own personality. Yes, it is hard to train them when they are young, but they figure out what is going on rather fast. It is just a matter of time before they will listen to what you say. Beagles are extremely food motivated, so try using training treats to help further the learning experience for him or her. Throw a little bit of love in the mix and I'm sure you will see a big difference in how they act. Hope this helps out a little bit.

Beagles aren't stupid. The only problem with beagles is the noise- they don't bark, they either yelp or howl. Being hunting dogs originally, their yelps are designed to be heard by hunters and the rest of the pack for a long distance. Which is great on the hunt, bad in a domestic setting.

Some beagles may be stupid but that goes with other types of dogs, not just beagles. However, they do seem to be on the slow side compared to most pets.

There's a difference between "stupid" and "stubborn," and beagles can be pretty stubborn when they have their mind set on something; especially smells. Beagles are only difficult to train if you don't know how to train them. My beagle puppy was potty trained in 2.5 weeks and learned how to ring a bell to go out. Sure she can be stubborn, but that's determination, not stupidity. My 5 month old puppy knows about 15 commands and tricks and does not need a food reward to do them. She is FAR from stupid, and I'm sure your dog isn't "stupid" either.

I don't believe Beagles are stupid. The important thing to remember when training is positive reinforcement and consistency. However, beagles are prone to hip problems. And labs are generally smarter dogs, but beagles are not stupid.

Beagles don't rank as highly intelligent but that doesn't mean they are stupid. Any dog can be exceptional depending on the amount of work you put into training and working with them. They are good pets but they can be very "barky." Short-haired and medium sized, they can also live outdoors if you don't want to keep them inside. However, remember they are hunting dogs and can wander off.

Actually, any breed can be a good pet. It all depends largely on your time and dedication to the pet and your devotion to training. Beagles are actually very smart animals and are still trained for hunting purposes. How old is he? It may just be that he's still young and learning...
