gwh18: This is a very odd question for you. If you are serious, then it is supposed to be symbolic of Christ giving himself for everyone. I was once a Catholic.

Which sacrament are you referring to? It is generally accepted that there is more than one. If you are referring to the Holy Eucharist, no... we Catholics do NOT believe that we are "eating" Jesus. We do believe that Jesus becomes present in the Holy Eucharist, and we receive him as often as we can. However, this is a profound mystery not easily explained. It's not like having a snack or something... if that is what your question means.

To be sure the Holy Roman Church requires fasting prior to partaking of Holy Communion. But not all churces do. Would you believe that some even have a prayer breakfast before the church service.
It is what you believe and accept that makes the difference. If you wrap yourself up in dogma, you are only going to get one point of view.

I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints. The sacrament is offered weekly and is comprised of the following: bread and water. Two prayers are given, one before the bread and one before the water. The prayers are offered and the sacrament is passed by members who hold the priesthood. In the church only worthy men can hold the priesthood. It is essencial that the sacrament be blessed and administered by the priesthood because they have the authority to act in the name of God, otherwise it is just bread and water. And finally, no, we have never thought we are eating the body or drinking the blood of Jesus. It is given to help us remember Him and His sacrifice.
