You can recycle all types of batteries. However, from the standpoint of most municipal/county run recycling/household hazardous waste programs, many only focus on rechargeable batteries. Since most rechargeable contain heavy metals, they should not be put in the landfill. The content of most alkaline batteries (now that the mercury has been removed) is able to be handled through the water treatment of leachate coming out of most sanitary landfills. There is a great recycling program available for alkaline batteries but it's pretty expensive for many places to participate in, whereas most rechargeable battery recycling programs are low cost or free. Check with your local household hazardous waste or recycling program.

Due to their contents, both types as well as just about any other basic battery (ex. D cell) should be recycled. The sulfuric acid inside is corrosive to the environment, plus the casing is not readily biodegradable. Some batteries are rechargable though, so recycling occurs in a different way though.

All batteries should be recycled or disposed of properly (taken to a shop that recycles or disposes of them). It's much better for the environment that way.
