I find most people these days don't have any respect for anything!
Children and teens today seem to want to do nothing and get everything for it. They are lazy and most just seem not to bother!
I don't know why it is though. I think that kids today just seem to take everything for granted and the real hard working citizen is a thing of the past.
It has to do with getting life too easy at home for a start. lack of discipline, too much technology taking away the power for them to think for themselves etc.
When I was younger (many years ago) I was raised to have respect for elders and appreciate everything I had. My parents didn't have much money so I was never spoilt and I had to work hard for everything I got. The same still applies to me today, and I am now raising my children not to take so much for granted and that respect will get them a long way.
My children don't feel the need to 'follow suit' and they have their own minds and opinions. I make them earn their pocket money and they appreciate it all the more.

Well, as someone pointed out on here, there are good people in this generation, too. And the ones that are difficult might be that way because they haven't had good experiences in the world. Maybe you can be that good influence if you take the attitude that you can be a role model and teacher. Most people would like some attention and some help - you can be a mentor and make a change in someone's life so they can see the world the way you do. There are no doubt at least a few of these co-workers who may have a veneer of not caring, but who could be reached if you showed you cared about them and how they're doing in the world. This is what teachers do every day and it's extremely rewarding.
The one thing you'll definitely need to start doing is seeing them as individuals and meet them half way. Try to understand one person's point of view and experiences, then go from there.

Thanks for losing all hope in the future that is tomorrow. I see this question and accompanying comments to be overly critical. Sure, the small percentage of "my generation" that you people have come in contact with may not be the best, but I can guarantee you'll find these same people in other generations as well, if you look hard enough. You wanna see the negative? go ahead and keep looking because you're sure to find it. Have some compassion and give the benefit of the doubt for once.
I'm a successful seventeen year old and I'm sick of being looked down upon just because I'm of "that generation". I've held a 30-hour a week job for a year now without being late or calling in sick once. All while attending high school and excelling there. All my classes are either AP (Advanced Placement) or Honors. I have a 3.9 GPA. OH YEAH....and did I mention I'm training to be a veterinary technician, I will be certified in nine months. The social life is not suffering either, school dances, sporting events, dates with my boyfriend, are all experienced as well.
Respect for elders? Definitely practiced by myself and other teens I know. I have a great relationship with my parents and I would be no where without the adults that have helped me along. I am grateful, and have expressed my thank you's. How dare you make such sweeping assumptions?
There's still people like me out there, and you don't have to look that hard to find them. Well, good luck with your pessimistic views of the future. I hope it works out for you all.

um, let's see, how can i sum this up for you... since the time that a current 20 year old was born, here's what the world has looked like DURING THEIR MOST FORMATIVE YEARS:
gandhi, martin luther king jr., malcolm x, bobby kennedy, and john f. kennedy had long since been assassinated; in the decade they were born reagan was shot and lennon shot and killed - to them this kind of thing is a fact of life.
nobody of any true ethical and moral stature has emerged in their lifetimes.
a b-movie actor was the US president when they were children. another president was having sex in the oval office with an employee, then lied about it.
round the clock television news and now the internet bring constant displays of the worst in human behavior, not the least of which from democratic governments
they've lived with the threat of nuclear annihilation and environmental destruction their entire lives
they've been inundated with every kind of shallow marketing message the hucksters could dream up and then some
any person anywhere in the world at any time is open to complete annihilation from talk radio goons - there's no respect in the media for anyone and everyone and everything is fair game
ann "the thug" coulter can say any crass, crude, ugly, nasty, and mean thing she wants and rather than being vilified she gets million dollar book, speaking, and television deals.
real and fictional violence is a constant drumbeat in their lives
they've watched their parents and other adults work hard, play by the rules, and still get thoroughly screwed by corporations, employers, lawyers, etc. and if they don't see it up close, they see it in the media
they know that for most people retail jobs are dead-end, mindless, boring, repetitious, and pointless ways to make tiny amounts of money that barely pay for a diet of fast food and crappy apartment living
get it?

It is sad. That generation on down is pathetic. The majority of them have no respect for themselves or anyone else. We only have the parents and the school systems to blame. That is why this is. No prayer and lack of discipline. I have witnessed the same thing at my job and dealing with my 17 year old sister and her friends. I was never like that, nor did I desire to be. This entire world is sad. The majority is going to torment because we don't have Jesus/God in our life and are not letting him be our guide. Not for real.

I'm sure they do have respect for something and someone, just not you or their jobs. Having worked in retail I can tell you they probably just learn that from the customers.

At where I work, it's usually some of the old women who are lacking respect or just complain way too much over insignificant things.

They have been raised without morals and values. They have learned nothing of Christ and have been filled with the ugliness of the world.. Their parents gave them everything they wanted and failed to spank their butts when they were rude or were willfully disobedient Shame on the parents who raised their children that way.

Do you expect people to knock themselves at this low pay dead end job? Like maybe if they work like h*ll for 10 years, the corportation will buy them a coffee mug or something? Your boss gets what your boss pays for.

Sure, first of all what do you expect from them. They are just being themselves and that seems to be the norm for someone their age. Secondly, find a new job, maybe even a new carreer.
