The plastic (called polyethylene terephthalate or PET) used in these bottles contains a potentially carcinogenic element (something called
diethylhydroxylamine or DEHA). The bottles are safe for one- time use only; if you must keep them longer, it should be or no more than a few days, week max, and keep them away from heat as well. Repeated washing and rinsing can cause the plastic to break down and the carcinogens (cancer-causing chemical agents) can leak into the water that YOU are drinking. Better to invest in water bottles that are really meant for multiple uses.

Yes, they release a harmful chemical when reused, they are not intended for that. If you neeed a water container, I would reccomend a bottle especially made for that. Also, freezing them can be as bad.
Also noteworthy- don't use plastic in the microwave for the same reasons.

It will release a chemical from the plastic into the water that was said to cause cancer. You should also not freeze water bottles, it also has the same effect.

Yes, that's true. To use repeatedly only increases the amount of bacteria on the mouth of the bottle and inside the bottle and to sufficiently clean the bottle would require hotter water than the bottle could withstand and would melt it.

I don't care what anyone says about not refilling water bottles because of the germs, and chemicals that you are exposing to yourself. I think that is all a bunch of bull just to make you buy more of the soft drinks, and water companies products. It hasn't harmed me yet, so I will continue to do so:)

because over time the plastic can release toxins which are absorbed into the water. also if the bottle is not washed well enough it can become a breeding ground for bacteria.
