Because the world is an unjust place, where the wicked go unpunished, the strong exploit the weak, watched over by a cold uncaring God who offers us only divine indifference.

Spain was once a World Power with links to the Papacy. It is no longer a major player on the stage of World History and thus joins many other countries who have committed atrocities. And today, who would be judge and jury? There is no country, past or present, with entirely clean hands and there are definitely some with better human rights records than others. Once the human race realizes, as one, that we are all in the same lifeboat, we will realize that there is no time for recriminations but we must pull together for survival and work together for a better future. Fanaticism of any kind will sink us all.

The amount of atrocities which the former Spanish Empire committed in colonizing the Americas is staggering. One would think that they should, as a nation, receive some sanction for the amount of economic benefit they reaped by their exploitation of the American indigenous people. Unfortunately, since there is little evidence to verify the exact cost of their exploitation, such a punishment would be difficult to determine. Also, international support would be difficult to gather, specifically because many of the largest nations in the world are similarly culpable of the same type of abuse.

What atrocities ? The ones during the slave trade or when they commissioned Columbus (an Italian) or when they wiped out an entire culture of indigenous peoples, when they conquered the Americas mostly central and south and burned their books and destroyed their religion erasing their history ? what past are you asking about. And maybe the answer is that they were at one time the most powerful country in Europe.

If you are referring to the Inquisition, then there is really no higher power to do the "punishing." The only higher power, really, is the Catholic Church, which is just as guilty for those atrocities.
If you are referring to other atrocities, then the question is what power would do the punishing?

Nearly every nation has committed atrocities at one time or another in history. Life is punishment, but with Jesus we have forgiveness.

Why has America never been punished for the atrocities it committed in the past?
Because the blame is not of the people of today.
The blame is the people of yesterday.

Spain may not have been directly punished for the atrocities it comitted on its colonies in the past but they no longer have the "superpower" status they had. Also, they no longer have direct control of their colonies.
