"The Bay Area" refers to the area around San Francisco, Oakland, Alameda, San Mateo, San Jose... you get the picture.

I would say that the biggest hurdle is the cost of renting a retail space. If you're looking at downtown(ish) San Francisco then I would forget it. There are already a zillion wine stores in that part of the city alone and you may be looking at rent of $6,000.

Geez, buddy, more than you can imagine. Everyone wants to live there who can afford it, and doesn't have a family to pay for, and the wine business is cut-throat. You need to be well-capitalized and have plenty to live on in case you don't break even. Owning a wine store in the Bay area would be a hobby for most.

I would do it, too, if I could.

then you need at least 500 thousand dollars for permits, rental space, inventory, workers and a few pay offs under the table
