A FIV cat can eat the same things as a non FIV Cat- but you want to go with the best food you can buy. It will help keep his immune system working.

Most catfood found in grocery stores, such as Nine lives, Meow Mix, etc, are very bad, the cat food equivelent of feeding your cat junk food. Go with a high quality cat food such as Royal Canin, Solid Gold, or Chicken Soup for the Cat. If you want a good indicator of high quality food- check the label. The ingrediants are listed from highest percentage, to the lowest, and should have "X" or "X Meal" (x being chicken, beef, turkey, etc) listed as the top, or maybe second ingrediant. If it lists animal meal, or animal byproduct, this is what was left after slaughter, and contains things like intestine, bones, things a cat can't digest. Animal meal indicates many types of animals mixed.

Also, Iams and Science Diet, while not especially bad for a cat, aren't really that good, either, and many people feel that Iams abuses their testing animals.

If cost is an issue, it only costs a couple cents more per feeding to buy high quality food than the cheap stuff, because your cat will use the litterbox less and save you money on litter.

this is a huge topic, and I would check www.catforum.com for more information.

It's great that your adopting a kitty that has FIV,most people would move on and find one that's 100% healthy. All animals deserves to live with caring people that will make their lives here as pleasurable as possible. No animal deserves to be pushed away for any reason.
Thank You!

Aww i really hope this works. The rescue i help at trys to rehome these poor kittys as only cats or in a household where kittys already have this condition. Sadly there are very few owners willing to take them on. This would make such a difference.

Any good-quality cat food should be fine, unless the cat is showing specific symptoms for which your vet prescribes a special food (liver or kidney failure, etc). Purina, Science Diet, and Iams are all good choices.
